Week 40 - Vision: Classic Novel

October 3, 2018 (276/365) • Week 40 - Vision: Classic Novel #dogwood52 #dogwoodweek40

“Gatsby believed in the green light, the orgastic future that year by year recedes before us.
It eluded us then, but that's no matter--tomorrow we will run faster, stretch out our arms farther.... And one fine morning--
So we beat on, boats against the current, borne back ceaselessly into the past.” ~ F. Scott Fitzgerald, The Great Gatsby

"Like water which can clearly mirror the sky and the trees only so long as its surface is undisturbed,
the mind can only reflect the Self when it is tranquil and wholly relaxed." ~ Indra Devi

Keeping Things in Perspective

September 23, 2017 (266/365)

"Conversation about the weather is the last refuge of the unimaginative." ~ Oscar Wilde

Yet, maybe it's not a matter of imagination,
but instead the need for a little perspective.
Over 90º in late September is not ideal, but at least,
we're safe from hurricanes, forest fires, and earthquakes.

Evening on Okauchee Lake

August 13, 2017 (225/365)

"Life is fleeting. And if you're ever distressed,
cast your eyes to the summer sky
when when the stars are strung across the velvety night.
And when a shooting star streaks through the blackness,
turning night into day... make a wish and think of me." ~ Robin Williams

Thank you, Tom and Gabriele, for a lovely evening on Okauchee Lake,
watching the meteor showers with good friends and good wine.

Softly...

October 16, 2016 (290/366)

“Softly the evening came. The sun from the western horizon
Like a magician extended his golden wand o'er the landscape;
Twinkling vapors arose; and sky and water and forest
Seemed all on fire at the touch, and melted and mingled together.”
~ Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, Evangeline

On the Horizon

August 25, 2016 (238/366)

"Education is not to reform students or amuse them or to make them expert technicians. It is to unsettle their minds, widen their horizons, inflame their intellects, teach them to think..." ~ Robert M. Hutchins

The sun is quickly setting on the summer of 2016. As of today, my colleagues are back in school, learning and preparing for the arrival of students on September 1st. It is both daunting and invigorating to plan for what's on the horizon as another school year begins. Here's to a year of wonder and adventure, of balancing challenging conditions and smooth sailing while keeping an even keel.

Idling

July 18, 2016 (200/366)

"Rest is not idleness, and to lie sometimes on the grass under the trees on a summer’s day, listening to the murmur of water, or watching the clouds float across the blue sky, is by no means waste of time." ~ John Lubbock, "Recreation," The Use of Life, 1894
